Data and limitations

The analysis uses the first observed new-registration notice per company and deduplicates person entries within each notice. Counts represent entries and companies, not nationally unique individuals. Unknown gender classifications are shown separately. These measures differ from the FSO business demography statistics.

Green business purposes and sectors are analysed in different datasets. Individual classification dates are not stored.

02 / The bigger picture

Every year tells a story.

Compare cumulative registrations with the previous year, or view the original totals.

The cumulative count for each year is compared with the immediately preceding year on the same calendar day. On days without publications, the latest value is carried forward only within the observed period. A comparison requires data for the previous year. Comparisons start in 2018 because 2016 is incomplete. Average over the seven calendar days ending on and including the plotted day. No complete average is available for the first six days. Data, research and the project

The stories behind the numbers.

Analysis from our database and insights from research. Every article identifies its data or original source.

Data analysis

Women in new-registration entries in 2025

20’587 person entries are classified as female, representing 27.1% of entries classified as female or male.

Background and context

A further 5’816 person entries have no unambiguous classification. Register notices contain different roles and do not establish a nationally unique count of women who are economic founders.

Data analysis

Making green business purposes visible

36’033 companies are classified as green in our data, 2.6% of classified companies.

Background and context

The analysis uses the business purpose described in the register. It is model-based and is not an environmental certification. It concerns classified company stock, not an annual green-business formation rate.

Research

Gender norms and business formation

Swiss municipalities with stronger support for gender equality in 1981 have higher women-to-men startup ratios in 2016–2023. Ulrich Kaiser and José Mata’s study reports an association, not a causal effect.

Background and context

Kaiser presented the December 2025 discussion paper on LinkedIn on 14 January 2026. His follow-up on 15 January considers childcare alongside local norms. Both posts concern the same study and acknowledge Chiron Services as an industry partner.

Official register information

Registration data comes from Zefix and publications in the Swiss Official Gazette of Commerce (SHAB). Coverage includes newly registered businesses across sectors and legal forms.

02

Publication dates matter

Daily counts follow SHAB publication dates. The year-to-date comparison uses the same calendar cutoff in the previous year. Only completed days in Swiss time are displayed. The data monitor shows the latest included day.
